Service Project:  "Read to Me"-Make A Difference Day-2015

Each year Altrusans try instill their love of reading to the first and second graders of the Young School in Saco, ME.  No other group was reading to the kids.  Club members read to the children, act out the stories and create a project for the children to complete at the story's end. The books are donated to the classrooms for their use.

Make A Difference Day -Book Distribution 2015

On the Saturday of MADD weekend, club members spent the day walking up and down the Main Streets of Biddeford and Saco with our little red wagons distributing free books to children and adults.  "Free?" People found it hard to believe that we were giving out free books and not "selling" anything.  We introduced them to Altrusa and gave them a book to enjoy later. In Saco, our book distribution overlapped with the city's harvest festival and increased traffic considerably.  Books were purchased with both club and members funds--some purchased new and some purchased from local library book sales.

Service Project:  NAP for Newborns at risk

Club members put together a bag full of items a mother might need as she takes her new baby home.  The bags are distributed by the nursing staff at Southern Maine Health Care/Biddeford.  They contain baby bottles, books, onesies, blankets, diapers etc.

Major Fund Raiser--Annual "Rain or Shine" Yard Sale

Held inside a local school, the annual yard sale is a collection of items gathered from Altrusans and friends that need to be recycled to other homes.   It's held the first Saturday in June and funds raised support club projects. Our 2015 yard sale raised $3094.00!

Relay for Life Team--"Altrusans for a Cure"

Members participate yearly in the Relay for Life fundraiser for Cancer Research.  In 2015, our team raised $2800.00!

Thanking the folks at our meeting site

The Club meets at the Wardwell Gardens--a multilevel senior living complex.  They don't charge us anything for the meeting room and the facilities are perfect for the club.  This year the club decided to say thank you.  The residents needed entertainment--on weekends especially.  On one weekend the club brought in a Barbershop Quartet and on another weekend we ran a Bingo/Ice Cream social.  Both were fun and appreciated.

High School Scholarships

In 2015, the club awarded 2 scholarships to high school students going to college. Winners are chosen based on their scholastic abilities, their focus on community service and their need for funds. Winners and their family are invited to dine with the club and share their goals for the future.
