Service Projects

Women Helping Women in their Next Step

Next Step is a program to assist women in the transition from incarceration to community living.  The club worked to improve women's self image.  They received a grant for a larger meeting room and helped women enrich their lives through theater and performing arts.  They received a grant to purchase a literacy software program.  Implementation of the program, spending time with the women in conversation were important components of the activity. On another visit, members brought mystery books and shared them over coffee and conversation.

Reach for the World-Read Project

Club members have provided a literacy project for the past 9 years involving third graders in 2 very different neighboring school districts. Children get together, listen to a storyteller and interview each other.  Later in the year, they get together at UCONN to listen to an author, received an autographed copy of his book, eat together and tour the library.  Each school also receives the gift of a supply of books. This is supported by significant grants from the SBM Foundation.
